-Ocean Island is looking for upbeat individuals for summer employment through our work for stay program. Two unique and exciting positions are in need of filling; 1.Tour Guide position available for summer 2013: individual will be required to guide tours around the gorgeous city of Victoria BC, 6 days a week, 3-5.5 hours per day. Six separate tours have been created, each one covering a beautiful aspect of our city. All training will be covered! Start date to be determined; please email us for further inquiries. 2.An Events Coordinator position available for summer 2013: individual would be required to organize and host events within our café/lounge a few nights per week, and act as a pub crawl host once our lounge closes at 11pm. 5.5 hour shifts, start date to be determined; please email us for further inquiries. -

Enjoy the best of the city and country! Relax in our friendly and modern backpackers inn while enjoying food & drinks from our Cafe Lounge. Tour our historic city that’s got everything you need in a compact center- Chinatown, nightlife, museums, etc. Access to ocean beaches, fantastic forests, lakes, rivers and mountains is minutes away by walking, bikes and public transportation.

Our Inn is a fully renovated 1891 heritage building close to all the action of the city as well as wonderful parks the beach and hiking trails. We are a family-owned business with approximately 30 employees, and our mission is to provide a friendly and welcoming home away from home to a wide variety of travelers from around the world. We enthusiastically welcome people of every age, race and religion.

We also sometimes have paid positions available for night cleaners, food prep, maintenance and other jobs if you are staying longer.

Learning opportunities at include: housekeeping practices, organic gardening, learning about Canada and other cultures.

What to bring: nothing! Your clothing and personal items and a smile! We ask you to please not bring your own linens or sleeping bags (so as not to bring bedbugs from the wild): we will provide you with sheets, blankets, etc. If you must bring a sleeping bag, it can be stored in our secure storage are until your departure.

Hang out and work with all kinds of people from our 30 person staff and 100-200 guests from Canada and all over the world. You can probably find someone who speaks your language but it’s also a great place to practice your English. We’ve got weekly events in our cafe lounge including Bluegrass night, Open Mic and Jam night.

Expectations:

Who we are looking for:Young, upbeat individuals who are confident in leading people, used to a fast-paced environment and who excel in social atmospheres. Individuals should also be capable of setting and achieving independent goals, have a responsible attitude, and communicate well in English. Minimum time commitment required: We ask for a minimum time commitment of six weeks; this way you have enough time to learn about Ocean Island, Victoria, and to have a firm understanding of the duties we are asking of you. If you would like to work with us longer than six weeks we will be happy to extend your stay as long as there is availability and your quality of work is up to standard.

Food:

Workers receive a free bed in one of our dorms (of which we have male, co-ed, and female dorms), and $22 in credit per day, which can be used to buy food, drinks or other goods and services at our cafe lounge or front desk.
